EPItect: Intelligent seizure sensor worn on the ear

Timely detection of seizures is critical to patient care. EEG can only be obtained through the hospital, but with the development of the sensor market and mobile technology, it is only a matter of time before the development of a small portable system to help treat the treatment. Embrace smart watches are one of them. Now, under the leadership of a team of epilepsy scientists at the University of Bonn Medical School, a German alliance is developing new products to offer users more choices.

This product is called EPItect, a sensor worn on the ear like a hearing aid that captures and measures any signs of seizures. The information is sent to the central computer through the bound smart phone, and the computer checks and confirms any abnormal behavior. Finally, the disease warning is sent to the patient, the relative of the patient, and the attending physician.

Cosinuss, a member of the alliance, a company in Munich, has developed sensors in the shape of earplugs. “In the early days of the study, we found that seizures were well detected by pulse acceleration and some movements,” said project coordinator Dr. Rainer Surges.

We plan to design our products to be smaller and more complete.

EPItect: Intelligent seizure reminder sensor

Seizures can be very dangerous and can sometimes cause serious accidents or even death from cardiac arrest. Because of the many symptoms of seizures, it is difficult to find the patient's disease. The most typical symptoms are convulsions, and some common symptoms, such as trembling lips, scratching clothes for no reason, and suddenly fainting, these symptoms may occur during the patient's sleep.

In addition to making the patient's life more secure, EPItect also provides accurate data on the frequency and severity of the disease to help doctors diagnose. In addition, researchers can develop better therapeutic products. For example, small sensors are used in clinical research to provide the most reliable data for the most effective drugs, reducing the condition.

This product is available to both adult and young patients. The alliance received a €2 million grant from the German government and some private companies. In the next few years, the product will be provided to some patients for clinical trials before expanding the scope of the study to more patients.
