This study first discovered the pluripotent stem cells in the mammary gland, and the existing theory of "refreshing" the properties of breast stem cells provides new ideas and targets for breast cancer detection and targeted therapy.
Breast cancer is divided into four categories clinically, among which the highest metastasis rate and the lowest three-year survival rate are about 20% of triple-negative breast cancer. These breast tumor cells have existing hormone-suppressing therapy and auxin. The inhibitory drug has no response and is in a state of no medical treatment.
Lesions of breast stem cells are presumed to be one of the important causes of breast cancer. But previously widely accepted theory suggests that breast stem cells have only a single differentiation potential. Zeng Yi's research team found stem cell-specific surface markers by screening, using breast stem cell transplantation technology and pedigree tracking of stem cells in model animals, and found that there are undifferentiated stem cells in adult breast organs, which have pluripotency. It is able to differentiate into all breast cell types during breast development.
This finding may rewrite the classification of breast cancer, laying the foundation for further exploration of the origin of breast cancer cells and its relationship with stem cells. Since the newly discovered mammary stem cell marker is a cell membrane surface receptor, a drug designed for the receptor does not need to enter the cell to function, and a breast cancer patient caused by cytopathic disease and having no obvious curative effect of the existing treatment is rescued.
