Injection is too scary, MIT graduated invented micro-needle capsules

Release date: 2015-05-26

Are you willing to take a shot, or are you willing to swallow a capsule full of needles? The answer to this question seems obvious, but a new invention may make you reconsider.

Carl Schoellhammer, a 28-year-old graduate student in chemical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, particularly dislikes injections. He said: "The injection is terrible, it hurts, no one likes it." In addition, the annual non-compliance problem caused $100 billion in additional medical expenses, some of which may be due to injections of drugs, "many people I don't want to take an injection. It may be because I am lazy. I may feel better if I don't need an injection, but I don't like the needle is definitely a big factor."

Schoellhammer decided to solve this problem by designing a Microneedle Pill (mPill), which earned a $15,000 award from the Lemerson-MIT student award.

mPill is a capsule with a small needle on the outside and the outside is covered with a pH reaction layer to make swallowing easier. This design is not for fun, Schoellhammer hopes it can replace traditional injections. Many injectable drugs are made from proteins, especially biological agents, which, if taken orally, are broken down by the digestive system before they enter the bloodstream.

Schoellhammer said that mPill is said to be in the body, in the needle-filled stainless steel capsules filled with the right amount of medicine, once the patient swallowed it, after reaching the intestine, the surface of the protective layer will dissolve, let these needles stab Into the surrounding intestinal wall, the drug is injected directly into the blood, which is much less painful than the traditional injection.

Many safety issues have been taken into account: these needles are very small, and Schoellhammer guarantees that even foreign objects such as glass or staples can pass through the body safely in 90%-95%. mPill has been tested on animals and has been successful in both safety and efficacy.

If you still feel scared, Schoellhammer is currently developing another version of the capsule, using a solid needle made of sugar mixed with drugs. The result is the same, the needle penetrates the surface of the digestive tract and delivers the drug directly to the blood, but at this point the needle itself dissolves, leaving only the capsule without the needle.

Schoellhammer currently only makes one capsule, and he plans to design a modified version, but he said: "There is no technical difficulty, it is a small capsule with a needle outside." Schoellhammer is aimed at drugs that are regularly injected, such as insulin. Because these drugs require an easier way of administration.
