The neural signal of fibromyalgia may be helpful in diagnosis and treatment

Release date: 2016-10-19

Researchers at the University of Colorado at Boulder have discovered a brain marker that identifies fibromyalgia patients with an accuracy of 93%, a potential breakthrough for future clinical diagnosis and treatment of highly prevalent conditions.

Fibromyalgia is usually defined as chronic extensive musculoskeletal pain accompanied by symptoms such as fatigue, anxiety and mood disorders. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that fibromyalgia affects more than 5 million adults each year in the United States, and the incidence of women is significantly higher than that of men.

Historically, fibromyalgia has been difficult to diagnose and treat due to the lack of histopathology and symptoms that overlap with other common chronic diseases.

University of Colorado at Boulder researchers using functional MRI scans (fMRI) to study a group of 37 patients with fibromyalgia, and 35 control patients brain activity, they are exposed to various non-painful analysis of visual, auditory and tactile cues and Pain pressure.

Multi-sensory testing allows researchers to identify a range of sub-markers and neurological patterns associated with pain hypersensitivity that characterize fibromyalgia.

Marina López-Solà, a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Colorado at Boulder, said: "The novelty of this research is that it provides a potential neuroimaging-based tool that can be used with new patients to understand the extent of certain neuropathological pain symptoms. ". This set of tools may help identify patient subtype markers, which may be important for individualized adjustments to treatment options.

The findings were recently published in the journal Pain and published by the International Association for Pain Research.

Tor Wager, director of the Cognitive and Emotional Control Laboratory, said: "Although many pain experts have established clinical procedures for the diagnosis of fibromyalgia, clinical markers do not explain the neurological events and do not reflect the patient's overall condition . " We are here to develop the potential of brain nerves - they can tell us some specific brain abnormalities and driven individuals feel pain, it can help us to realize what fibromyalgia is to find more effective ways to treat central nervous system disorders .

If replicated and expanded in future studies, the end result may provide a neurological roadmap of brain activity that will lead to new approaches to the diagnosis and treatment intervention of fibromyalgia .

López-Solà said: "This is a significant step, build on previous work on other important, step is a natural evolution of our understanding as a brain disease of fibromyalgia in."
