Google plans to use its artificial intelligence technology in first-class hospitals. Earlier this week, the search engine giant said it would work with the NHS, a technology that alerts employees to timely attention to patients who have other complications from kidney failure.
The details of the technology are not exhaustive at this stage. But it is well known that Google DeepMind recently acquired Hark, a task management app designed to replace paper systems and pagers, developed by a team of Imperial College of Medicine in four years. The team's head, Ara Darzi, is a well-known surgeon and project leader for the Institute of Global Health Innovation at Imperial College.
Senior doctor Cosima Gretton said: "This app is really good. Once the patient has anything, the nurse can send a message to the doctor through Hark and indicate the priority." This app is aimed at patients with severe renal failure. .
At Imperial College Hospital, Hark was used by doctors to prioritize and communicate with nurses. For now, Hark does not use artificial intelligence to predict which patients will get worse or decide on the best treatment. But Mustafa Suleyman, co-founder of DeepMind and head of applied artificial intelligence, said there may be changes in the future.
Due to the failure of a series of software investments, the NHS IT system is facing various problems. Some experts worry that this technology is only an expedient measure in the current imperfect medical system.
Jordan Slain, a Bay Area doctor and entrepreneur, once expressed his opinion to NHS: “The addition of artificial intelligence technology to such an imperfect medical system is considered to improve – it is simply nonsense.â€
As Slain said, it is not easy to apply this technology to other NHS hospitals on a large scale. Gretton believes that every hospital has the right to decide whether to buy software, and these purchase contracts usually have 10 to 15 years of legal effect. There are 19 separate systems in a hospital in Gretton.
She believes that if Google DeepMind can help the hospital's existing software and artificial intelligence technology, it will attract many hospitals, and will greatly improve the safety of patients.
