Light micro-invasion, engineers made a vibrator to help doctors detect tumors

Release date: 2016-08-09

In minimally invasive surgery, because the surgical opening is often small in order to reduce the size of the patient's scar, doctors mainly use some longer, smaller surgical tools to perform surgery on the patient.

But this also brings up a problem, if the wound is not open, it will also hinder the surgical field of vision. The surgeon is also unable to directly touch the lesion of the patient's body by hand to obtain more accurate information during the operation.

Some engineers at Hiroshima University in Japan want to solve this problem by modifying surgical equipment. Based on an algorithm that can monitor weak signals, the stochastic resonance model developed a vibrator that uses vibration frequency changes to alert doctors to tissues or tumors encountered during surgery.

This vibrator can be attached to the handle of the surgical instrument used by the doctor, and it will continue to vibrate at a constant frequency during use. The doctor can judge the situation in the patient's body by the change in the vibration frequency perceived by the palm.

In their tests, the tester was very sensitive to changes in vibration frequency after using such a device with vibration. In the experiment, volunteers were blindfolded to participate in the test. They took a surgical tweezer with a vibrator to identify sandpaper of different materials inside a small cup and found a small plastic ball. Through this process, different tissues are detected during the surgery and tumors are identified.

The developer of the device said that although it reminds the doctor of the operation by vibration, it is safe for the patient because it is only a device installed on the doctor's surgical tool and will not be placed in the patient. In addition, since the vibration is very slight, it does not cause vibration of the surgical equipment.

However, at present, it is only in the experimental stage, and their next plan is to carry out relevant experiments in the real environment of surgery to improve the accuracy of its detection.

Steroids

"Steroids are a general term for a large group of derivatives widely distributed in the biological world, which can also be called steroidal or steroidal compounds. Steroid hormones are mainly synthesized and secreted by various parts of the body, and a small part can be synthesized artificially. They play an important auxiliary role in the functional activities of organs, tissues and cells of the body. Steroid hormones mainly include adrenal cortical hormones secreted by the adrenal cortex and gonadal secretion of sex hormones, when taking a large number of steroid hormones, will produce swollen face, nausea and other side effects
