Among the many performance parameters of the infrared thermal imaging system, since the MRTD reflects both the thermal sensitivity of the system and the spatial resolution of the system, it can be tested by both the manufacturer of the thermal imager and the thermal imager. User testing has therefore become the most important parameter for comprehensive evaluation of the performance of infrared imaging systems. As a subjective parameter, although MRTD seems simple, the fact that MRTD test is very difficult, because there are many easy mistakes in the measurement process, which will seriously reduce the repeatability and accuracy of the test results. The subjective measurement method of MRTD is a very time consuming process. The use of objective measures can reduce test time, but system parameters are determined by performing a large number of MRTD subjective measurements on the same type of camera before objective testing. This requirement makes the objective measurement of MRTD only advantageous when a large number of the same type of thermal imager needs to be tested. The objective measurement method is suitable for the thermal imager manufacturer. The MRTD objective measurement methods mainly include: MTF method, photometric method and image recognition method.
The subjective measurement of MRTD is usually measured by multiple observers (more than 3). The average of multiple measurements is theoretically possible to eliminate the differences in visual acuity and criteria of different testers. The experimental results show that multiple It is not uncommon for different test teams to have deviations of up to 50% from the MRTD measurements of the same camera. There are two main reasons for this result: 1 the difference in the level of the test group; 2 the test equipment used in the test, the judgment criteria, the observed environmental conditions and the differences in the test procedures.
